In principle, all companies, regardless of size, are obligated to provide occupational health services. The scope of these services depends on the company size, the industry, and the specific hazards present in the workplace. Smaller companies may, under certain conditions, choose alternative service models.

The company physician supports the employer in all matters relating to occupational health and safety and accident prevention. His duties include:

  • Consulting on the design of workplaces, work processes and the use of work equipment.
  • Verification of compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Conducting training and instruction for employees.
  • Investigation of work-related illnesses and development of preventive measures.

Company size is generally determined based on the number of employees, taking full-time and part-time staff into account. The precise allocation to support groups is carried out in accordance with the provisions of DGUV Regulation 2.
